As one of the leading suppliers and installers of fires in the South of England, West Country Fires are able to offer a range of coal fires, wood burning fires and stoves. From period Victorian cast iron fires to post-modern urbanism, our open fires range can cater to a wide variety of tastes and styles. Coal Fire TypesThe classic Edwardian and Victorian cast iron insert fire is suitable for many properties and homes in the UK, being both elegant and practical. It is usually available with an arched canopy (hood) or square with tiled inlays in the fascia. Often used with a decorative back plate. The coal bars or fret usually sits above an ash pan with the fuel bed suspended in the fire basket above. This affords the fuel ventilation allowing it to burn efficiently and also to let ash fall below to be caught in the ash pan. The basket type coal fire has both contemporary and period styles. As much at home in a Georgian or Regency fireplace as in the modern home the enduring qualities of the fire basket have ensured it continued use. Most often constructed to form a rectangular cast iron basket with feet raising it above the hearth, the basket can be of any design and dimensions. We will often recommend installing a fireback (a cast iron plate that sits behind the grate/basket) as this helps convect and radiate heat, meaning the coal fire burns more efficiently. Although typically designed to burn wood and other solid fuels, stove fires are suitable for coal burning and are ideal for inglenooks and set back fires found in many traditional properties.
