Wood Burning Stoves

Whilst for some wood burning stoves are a bit of an archaic heating device, they have enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent years. With the increased popularity of the rural lifestyle, constant conversions of barns, farms and cottages and not to mention to advent of design trends such as shabby chic, the wood burning stove remains a popular household accessory.

Traditional Focal Point

Stoves are very much a traditional rustic heating device. Formerly used to heat rooms as well as drying garments and warming food or water, today they are very much an attractive focal point, albeit still with the same functionality. Traditional wood burning stoves require a flue, in order to dispense with the smoke effectively; however modern variations, powered by gas or electricity, produce no damaging smoke and can function effectively without one.

Traditionally stoves would be made out of cast iron or a similarly durable metal, designed to take extreme heat and to maintain it's warmth over a long period of time. This also gives wood burning stoves their distinctive matt black appearance. The stove is fed with wood or in some modern designs multi-fuels or smokeless fuels, through doors at the front of the main body. When lit, the smoke is fed through a chimney, which is attached to the main stove, upwards and out of the room.

Contemporary Fuels

Fuels for wood burning stoves have developed significantly, with a number of alternatives to wood now available. Some modern stoves run from gas/LPG and electricity, whilst others use a multi fuel which utilises a secondary fuel as well as wood.

Rustic Period Stoves

When choosing a wood burning stove it may be useful to consider that we stock both the traditionally designed models as well as more contemporary designs. Our period fires are designed in the traditional rustic style, available in a customary matt black as well as a range of other colours, including deep greens and blue. Whilst the designs differ from model to model, they ostensibly use the same fundamental principles.

Contemporary Design

The contemporary models break the mold somewhat. Whilst varying across the range, they largely take the basics of the period fires and infuse them with modern design and technology. Modern polished metals adorn many of the models, allowing the stove to blend in with even the most chic contemporary décor. They also run on a number of fuels other than just simply wood, including gas and electricity, meaning that many of them don't require a flue.
