A small French style marble chimneypiece of 18th century design having moulded panels to the frieze and jambs beneath a serpentine shelf. Shown with the Rokeby fire basket and slate hearth.

The Pompadour reveals the characteristic flair for curvilinear design and in this chimneypiece the decoration is all about the movement of the line.

No intricate modelling or distinctive Rococo motifs except for the graceful serpentine curves of the entablature, mantel shelf, and slender cabriole jambs.

The jambs, elegantly scrolled, on tall footblocks face out at a 45 degree angle, giving the piece a very open appearance, a quality that is enhanced by the relative simplicity of the carving. Shown with the Rokeby fire basket and slate hearth.
