A beautiful example of a French chimneypiece from the Rococo period: around 1750. It displays the sinuous lines that characterise the movement of Rococo design. Manufactured in finest quality white marble, the execution of this chimneypiece with its free form carving is a test of the carver's art.

However, it is the curvilinear aspect that is so characteristic of Rococo design, particularly as seen in the graceful serpentine sweep of the mantel shelf, and the cupid’s bow of the entablature. At the centre of the entablature a heavily ornate cartouche, forms the heart of the piece and is further complemented by the subtle fluid lines of the recessed panelling on the rest of the frieze.
