The Victorian Corbel is another elegant chimney piece that is sparing in its decorative details, but an arresting sight nonetheless

The Victorian Corbel is an elegant chimney piece that is sparing in its decorative details, but an arresting sight nonetheless.

The frieze and jambs are left entirely plain except that the jambs stand on block feet and the opening is flanked by a pair of slender struts capped by a fragment of cornicing that appears to support the frieze. A generous mantel shelf is buttressed by two shapely corbels at either end which are deeply fluted, each finishing in a scalloped fantail in the spirit of the Rococo.

An early 19th century style marble surround with carved corbels supporting the bevelled edged shelf. Shown with the Britton no. 3 register grate and slate hearth.
